Gabriel Barcia-Colombo
ABOUT
Gabriel Barcia-Colombo is a mixed media artist whose work explores connectivity, memory, and the human desire to preserve personal and collective histories. His practice focuses on collections, memorialization, and the act of leaving behind a digital imprint for future generations.
His work takes the form of video sculptures, immersive performances, large-scale projections, and vending machines that sell human DNA. Through these works, Barcia-Colombo examines the relationship between technology, identity, memory, and mortality. His video artworks reflect a contemporary impulse to document, archive, and reconstruct personal histories by “collecting” human portraits through moving images.
Barcia-Colombo’s work questions technological dependency and explores how digital systems increasingly influence knowledge, prediction, and belief. Moving between post-apocalyptic visions and contemporary society, his imagery presents technology as both a reflection and mediator of human anxieties surrounding the future.
Gabriel was commissioned as the first digital artist to present work at the New Fulton Terminal Stop through the MTA Arts & Design program in New York City. His work has been exhibited at the Volta, Scope, and Art Mrkt art fairs, the Victoria & Albert Museum, Grand Central Terminal, and the New York Public Library. He received an Art and Technology grant from the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA), where he created “The Hereafter Institute,” a project examining the future of death rituals, memorials, and their relationship with technology. His work is part of the permanent collection of LACMA.
Gabriel served as a member of the artist advisory board at the New York Foundation for the Arts, as well as the education committee member at the Museum of Art and Design. In 2012 Gabriel gave a TED talk entitled “Capturing Memories in Video Art,” and in 2014 he gave another entitled “My DNA Vending Machine” and was awarded a Senior TED fellowship.
In 2016, Barcia-Colombo founded Bunker.nyc a pop-up gallery showcasing emerging technology-based art. In 2017, Bunker became the first pop-up digital art gallery to open at Sotheby’s Auction House in New York Summer 2017 He is a New York Foundation for the Arts grant recipient and faculty member of the Interactive Interactive Telecommunications Program at New York University’s Tisch School of the Arts.
